Master Duel: Rule Book - Part 8: What you can and cannot do
Actually, about this part, for newbies, there will be no new or strange knowledge for you because all the previous parts can be used for this part! However, here I will use a few hypothetical situations so you can better understand how the cards work!
Sections covered in this guide:
"Only 1 exists..."
You've often encountered cards that designate "one... on the field", right? So have you ever thought about what you can do in that case or do you just surrender as soon as you encounter such a field?
Read on to understand more about these things!
Gozen Match, There Can Be Only One and Rivalry of Warlords (You can only control one ...)
Rivalry of Warlords and Gozen Match are Continuous Trap types, allowing you to only control face-up monsters of one Type (for Rivalry) or one Attribute (for Gozen).
Once the activation of these Trap Cards is complete, look at the face-up monsters you control. If they all have the same Type/Attribute, you don't have to do anything else. If there are multiple Types/Attributes, you choose one Type/Attribute to keep, and send face-up monsters that are not of that Type/Attribute to the GY.
There Can Be Only One functions exactly like these two cards, but in reverse, so you can only control one specific Monster Type. (That's why it doesn't get hit too hard :v)
So what can I do?
While Rivalry/Gozen is active and you have a face-up monster, you cannot Summon monsters with a different Type/Attribute than the monster(s) you controlled.
Therefore, you cannot do any of the following to place a monster with the wrong Type/Attribute on your side of the field:
Therefore, you cannot do any of the following to place a monster with the wrong Type/Attribute on your side of the field:
- Normal Summon
- Tribute Summon
- Flip Summon
- Xyz Summon
- Synchro Summon
- Fusion Summon
- Special Summon using the monster's own effect.
Additionally, you cannot attempt to perform a Summon of an incorrect Type/Attribute even if the Summon would cause the original Type/Attribute to leave the field. Here are a few examples:
Sky Striker Ace - Kagari, Sky Striker Ace - Raye and Sky Striker Ace - Shizuku (Example 01)
Under the effects of Rivalry of Warlords or Gozen Match , you cannot use Sky Striker Ace - Raye as a Link Material OR use its effect to Summon a "Sky Striker Ace" Link monster from the Extra Deck.
Under the effects of There Can Be Only One , you cannot use Sky Striker Ace - Kagari as a Link Material for Sky Striker Ace - Shizuku .
Under the effects of There Can Be Only One , you cannot use Sky Striker Ace - Kagari as a Link Material for Sky Striker Ace - Shizuku .
Gameciel, the Sea Turtle Kaiju, Radian and the Multidimensional Kaiju (Example 02)
Under the effects of Rivalry of Warlords or Gozen Match , you cannot attempt to Summon a "Kaiju" monster if it would place an incorrect Type/Attribute on the field, even if the monster you would Tribute leaves yard.
If you or your opponent control a "Kaiju" monster(s), neither player can Summon additional/new "Kaiju" monsters to the field to violate the condition of only controlling 1 "Kaiju" monster. .

So what can I do?
You can activate cards and effects to Summon the same Type/Attribute monster you have on the field.
You can also activate cards to Summon more than one monster Type/Attribute. The result depends on what you have on the field:
You can also activate cards to Summon more than one monster Type/Attribute. The result depends on what you have on the field:
- If you do NOT control any monsters: You can activate cards that can Summon monsters with more than one Type/Attribute. They are all Summoned, but you must immediately choose one Type/Attribute and send all the others to the GY.
- If you already HAVE control of a monster: First of all, if the Summon effect is targeted, you can only target monsters with the appropriate Type/Attribute. If the Summon effect does NOT target, you can activate it as long as the effect can be resolved using only monsters of the appropriate Type/Attribute. In this case, only suitable monsters will be Summoned to the field.
Gladiator Beast Murmillo and Gladiator Beast Bestiari (For example)
Same goes for "Gladiator Beast". You can return a Gladiator Beast to your Deck and activate its effect as long as there is another Gladiator Beast in your Deck that you CAN Summon of the same Type/Attribute as the one you returned. However, if you do not have a face-up monster when the effect resolves , you can Summon any Type/Attribute of the monster.
If you do not control a face-up monster , you can Summon a monster of any Type/Attribute. Additionally, if Rivalry/Gozen is negated , you can Summon monsters of any Type/Attribute. If it is no longer negated, you must send the monster to the GY until you control only one Type/Attribute again, as if Rivalry/Gozen had just resolved.

Another case
Prohibition and Psi-Blocker (Prevent)
Both are typical examples of not allowing opp to use a card with the proposed name . So what can we do in this case? And nothing can be done?
What you cannot do
If the name of the card called is a monster:
- Normal Summon or Set
- Special Summon
- Placed on the field
- Used as Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link Materials
- Attack
- Change battle position manually
- Activate its effects to start the Chain (includes required effects)
- Apply its continuous effect.
- Activate the card or any of its effects
- Apply any Continuous Effects
- Set (This also includes Setting a Spell/Trap card with the effect of Dust Tornado )
- Use it from your hand or Deck, such as with the effect of Masked Beast Des Gardius .
What you can do
If the name of the card called is a monster:
- Use it to pay a cost. For example: Trade-In , Enemy Controller .
- Copy its name, Lvl, ATK, DEF and effects. For example: Elemental HERO Prisma , Phantom of Chaos .
- Use it for other card effects. Examples: Reinforcement of the Army , Foolish Burial . (It is completely legal to add it to your hand from any card position, targeting and/or affecting it in any way - EXCEPTIONS : Except for effects when performing a Summon Fusion, Synchro, Xyz, or Link except by Future Fusion ).
- Use it for another Monster Summoning Process. (This also includes using it as part of a Sacrificial Summon)
- Change its battle position via card effects. For example: A/D Changer , Book of Moon
- Apply any lingering effects.
- Use it to pay a cost. For example: Summoner Monk .
- Use it for other card effects. For example: Magician of Faith , Ninja Grandmaster Hanzo . (It is legal to add this card to your hand from any location or to use the named card's effect via another card. Examples: Spellbook of the Master , Predaplant Verte Anaconda ) .
- Apply any lingering effects.
